Build an event taxonomy your app can grow into

A practical way to name events, control properties, and keep product analytics readable as teams and features multiply.

Team organizing notes on a wall

Start with decisions, not screens

A tracking plan should serve questions the team is prepared to act on. List the decisions behind onboarding, activation, engagement, and retention before naming a single event. This keeps instrumentation focused on behavior instead of mirroring every interface click.

Use a consistent grammar

Event names become easier to scan when they follow one pattern, such as object plus action. Properties should add context without restating the event. Document allowed values for fields such as source, plan, or entry point so analysis does not fragment into near-duplicates.

Treat the taxonomy as a product

Assign an owner, review additions, and include analytics QA in release checks. A short changelog and quarterly cleanup are usually more effective than a large governance committee. The goal is a shared language that stays useful.
